This unit covers the skills and knowledge required to recognise and assess conditions that require gas testing; test the working atmosphere using an electronic test apparatus and interpret the results to determine if it is safe for the proposed job activity. 

This course applies to situations where an individual may be required to perform gas testing prior to entering a specific area or workspace and whilst work is carried out in the workspace. Atmospheric testing is an important component of confined space work as these working environments may be hazardous, unpredictable, subject to time pressure, chaotic and expose responders to risk, on land or water, by day or night.

Situations that require testing might include:

  • confined spaces
  • enclosed and partially enclosed spaces
  • hot work
  • storage tanks, silos, pits, pipes, shafts, ducts, transport vehicles and ships
  • testing as part of issuing a work permit
  • monitoring as part of working under a work permit
  • open areas
  • holding the gas tester by hand
  • lowering the gas tester into a space, e.g. on a line.

This course can be delivered/assessed in the workplace or at facility organised by the training provider.

Course Durations

Course durations can vary for multiple reasons, so the durations below are the minimum possible amount.

Refresher Face to Face contact time of at least 2 Hours 30 Mins
Face-to-Face Face to Face contact time of at least 4 Hours
Online with face-to-face assessment Face to Face contact time of at least 2 Hours

An individual undertaking this course with Allens Training Pty Ltd will need to demonstrate the following to be eligible for entry:

  • An official form of photo identification (e.g., driver’s licence, passport, or student ID).
  • Physical capability to be able to meet the demands of the practical demonstration
  • Visual acuity to accurately read and interpret gas detector displays, calibration markings, and warning indicators
  • Protective footwear/ safety shoes and comfortable/ practical clothing must be provided by the student and worn during the practical sessions and assessment
  • To successfully complete this course, students will need to demonstrate the following language, literacy, numeracy and digital (LLND) skills during training and assessment:
    • Learning: Learn and follow steps to check if a site is safe before entering, especially when air quality might be a risk.
    • Reading: Read and interpret safety instructions, warning labels, or equipment displays that tell me if the air is safe
    • Writing: Write short notes or fill in records about the air testing conducted
    • Oral communication: Relay information and explain results and ask questions if I’m unsure about safety.
    • Numeracy: Use numbers to read levels on a gas monitor and know if the results are safe or need action.
    • Digital Literacy: Able to use a mobile phone or basic device to read messages, follow online instructions, complete online forms or access learning resources.

Online learning: Students must have basic digital literacy skills to navigate online platforms, complete assessments, and access course materials. Before enrolment, students should assess their ability to engage in online learning. Support is available where required. The online learning program can be found in the student portal. Students must have access to a computer, smart phone, tablet or other electronic device with access to the internet to complete the online studies and associated assessment tasks.

Delivery mode: Online with face-to-face - The online pre-course learning and theory assessment is expected to take approximately 3-4 hours to complete. These timeframes are estimates. Individuals with prior experience in similar training may complete the online component in less time, while those new to the subject may need more time to complete all the learning content and theory questions.

Individuals undertaking this course will be expected to complete both written and practical assessment tasks.

Assessments conducted during face-to-face training session(s) include: 

Practical scenario: 

  • Scenario – Maintain, calibrate and gas test in a controlled atmosphere / confined space

Documentation:

  • Complete a Confined Space/Controlled Work Area Entry Permit

Theory assessment - A written assessment consisting of short answer and multiple-choice questions. The student must complete all assessment questions.

Students are required to complete a self evaluation against the following core skills as part of the enrolment process. This will allow your trainer to understand any additional support that may be required during the course delivery and assessment.
